They have a small private lot in the back that they share with two other businesses but there's plenty of street parking around this area. If you don't mind walking 3/4s of a block, you can just park in the neighborhood as well. They also have outdoor seating to eat your pasties if you can't wait.
Affordable, filling, flavorful, delicious!
And goes really well with an ice cold beer.
This place is crap in terms of service.
It took 40 minutes for us to get a plate of ham fried rice.
It took you 70 minutes to tell us that nobody started on the popcorn chicken.
It took an additional 20 minutes to get a to-go container of shaved ice.
We were the first ones to sit down outside and the last party to leave because of your mediocre service.
You deserved your 43 cent tip. I'm not sorry and I'm never coming back here again. This time, I mean it.

NEW REVIEW.
I haven't gone back to this place since the last 'great shaved ice' escapade my girlfriends and I partook in. I think that was May of 2007. Sometime around then.
I went with two other girlfriends this morning at 1:30am.
I get it. You're tired. Everyone's tired. People are walking in. It's cold. You hate working there and you're tired, you want to leave, go home, sleep, and dream of not working at Guppy's. I GET IT.
However:
1. Telling us to get off the curb (and without a please or thank you, mind you) is not the best way to start the night off for you.
2. Not giving us a table indoors when I can see plainly, four tables that aren't in use and are clean, is just a "WTF factor".
3. I understand you're not a coffee shop. But why don't you have SOY milk? I am lactose intolerant. That means, there be some bizniz I need to take care of when I am done here, y'understandmE?
I gave them a hard time last night. I have no doubt that they were talking smack about me.
On the other hand though, because it was late, everyone was tired (and slightly pissed because our previous plans fell through), and my server took out the kimchi "fried" rice that I had originally ordered (I complained because it was soggy and I told him to taste-test it, but he didn't even want to try!), I left them a 20% tip.
Original review:
Don't hate on how many stars I give it. (Originally, 4 stars)
This place is crowded, especially from 6pm-close. I don't think I've ever come here without having to wait at least a couple of minutes for attention in what to do. If you're going to eat here, go straight inside towards the cashier's stand. Depending if there's a person there or not, put your name down on a list with the number in your party. If there's a person there, ask them to put your name down.
The crowd here is Asian. And not just any type of Asian, but Asian teenyboppers, teenagers, and those attracted to bright lights. And fishes. They've little fishtanks on the walls and under the counters, umbrellas opened up INSIDE (for decoration, perhaps?), heaters outside for when it gets cold, and enough menus and water to go around.
I come here for three things:
- Shaved ice. Their shaved ice isn't legendary, but since Shakas has closed down since, it's the next alternative. Generally, my friends and I get a small shaved ice with mixed fruit (strawberries, mangos, and bananas). Their small, on the menu, indicates that it can feed 2 people, but THEY'RE WRONG. It can probably feed like, 4 people. Or more, depending how much cold and fruit you can put away.
- Friend time. I rarely get to see my friends and when I do, it's always a late night out at Guppy's. Their food isn't much to rave about here, but it's eatable and hell, that's better than a mess of uneatable food.
- Spicy popcorn chicken. I made the mistake of giving my man a taste of it and he's been hooked the entire time we've gone out.
The cons to this place would be the crowd, how incredibly "fob"-like it seems, and the parking.
I found Cafe` con Leche by walking through Wilshire and cutting through the parking lots to get to my car parked off Amerige. It looked neat, colorful, but very empty. Taking in mind that it was 7 pm on a Friday evening, it was dead -- the only people inside were the family that owned the joint. Their kids or nieces were rolling around on the ground, bored, and trying to find something to do.
They opened up about a month and a half ago but still, some things were missing from their place. Their bakery item selections were very small. They don't make the pastries themselves but rather, order from "the best Mexican bakery in Santa Ana". The drink prices are found on a sheet of paper in front of the register -- hard to find if you're looking at the board top of the espresso machine with their drink selections.
They only had regular beans and no decaf. Luckily, my body didn't protest as much as it used to, so maybe they used bold beans (not as much caffeine as light beans). I ordered a small iced mexi-mocha which didn't taste any different than an iced mocha from either Starbucks or the Bean. It was refreshing though. I also bought their packaged flan which didn't go down well -- it wasn't very cold in temperature, though it was held on the cold side of their display case. I'm not sure what went wrong there.
I don't know how much I paid for each individual item. They have a sign posted that the flan is $1.75, but for the total of two items, I paid $7.06. That means, without the flan and estimating the tax amount, I paid about $4.25 for a small iced drink. I don't understand it. I would refer back to my receipt, but the woman who rang me up messed up on the register and I had to tell her how much change she owed me. ($20.26-7.06=$13)
The interior is very colorful - very bright primary colors adorn the walls and a hot magenta colors half of the restroom. The restroom doesn't seem like it's handicap-friendly, but then again -- the entrance to this joint isn't handicap-friendly (stairs and no ramp way). They put a lot of thought in the interior decorating.
I can't quite place my finger on it, but it feels like they're incomplete in some areas of their business. Perhaps it was the lack of a crowd or the mysterious bill.

Lizarran Tapas Restaurant
Categories: Spanish/Basque, Tapas Bars
I love how they set the tables up. It's open space - easy to move around, you can opt to sit away from the floor and near the wall. There's just one kink in the choreography of the tables -- the bills and register is a few feet away, in front of the tapas bar, which makes for some traffic to get around.
Tapas is meant to be eaten slowly, enjoyed with good company, and with delicious alcoholic beverages.
And enjoy I did. Surrounded by people I hadn't seen before, the boyfriend, and a yummy glass of Sangria, I delighted my taste buds in flavors that weren't tasted before. Didn't order off the menu or take a look at it, but I think I'll be stopping by again to eat.
I passed by this place today, a day after I had eaten dinner here, and this place is POPPIN'. Busy busy busy. I'm glad to see it.
The only thing that did it for me this time around was that they took down a reservation AND they gave the birthday girl a free scoop of sesame seed ice cream. That was nice of them. They even shut off the lights and played a cheesy 80's tune of 'Happy birthday' goodness.
I was unimpressed however, with the amebi and the Chirashi. The heads of the amebi weren't covered in batter enough and deep-fried well either.
The cuts of the fish in my Chirashi, and in my separate order for hamachi, were too thick. I even had my friend comment in surprise at how thick they were. Who serves a slice of fish, one inch thick??

They open up at 5pm for dinner and are closed from, I believe, 2 pm. Denysia C. and I came in around 4:05 pm and decided to sit next door at Red Mango for a bit until they opened.
From the time that we entered [5pm] until the time that we left [6:30pm], there were already a few parties in there dining. Really, really, really good sushi.
Looks like they changed their happy hour from 3-7pm to 5-7pm. Also, their happy hour prices go as far as discounting 50% off from their appetizers. They came by often to fill up our water and took away plates. Between the two of us, we ordered about $100 dollars of sushi. Yum yum yum. Their cuts of makuro and hamachi were delicious. The amebi was fresh and I love that they deep-fry the heads.
Their rolls were delicious! I wish I could say that I'm full from sushi, but I really don't think I'll ever be.

Calico Cake Shop
Categories: Bakeries, Candy Stores, Cooking Schools
I am a strange person, this I already know.
I used to pass by this way when I took a detour from work to home and I noticed the large, brown sign of Calico, advertising it's presence. I was making a list a while back, considering which places I could work at, learn the tricks of the trade, etcetera, when I realized that I had heard about them being a supply store as well. I realized then that I could just pick up some supplies, finish my book !, and be happy knowing that I wasn't wasting gas by going over to Williams-Sonoma or Crate & Barrel nor paying the high prices tagged in those oh-so-lovely-money-sucking stores.
So, I brought myself over there just today, walked in, and stared at everything with big eyes. The store space itself isn't that large, but baking supplies generally don't take up a lot of space unless you have a lot of them to begin with. (see: my cupboard) Considering all those factors, Calico had a hefty amount of supplies.
The front side is dedicated to cake toppers, edible candy ornaments, carriers, birthday supplies, and some decorative boxes. There may be more that I might have just missed. The back side has .. I don't even know, more decorative boxes, big-supply boxes (think of those pink cake boxes), chocolate quarters by the pound, special icing tips, icing, coloring, cookie cutters, cook-books, a door or two to the bakery, candy molds, and ... I know I'm missing more, but that's all I can recall at the moment.
I do remember that they don't have a large selection of baking pans. I mean, yes, they do have the standard round tins and cookie sheets, but I saw only one madeleine pan in stock and very few special tins. However, they do have the cake-cupcake-pan, so if you're trying to make yourself a giant cup-cake, then come here! It's only $25.
They have a minimum charge of $10 on Mastercard, Visa, and debit cards have that minimum requirement as well as an extra 50 cent charge for debit-ness. They no longer accept checks and they don't accept bills greater than $20.

The Rock Gym Indoor Climbing Center
Categories: Amusement Parks, Gyms, Amateur Sports Teams, Trainers
Gotta tell ya folks - come with a friend if you're going to use the climbing harness. It's almost required, as one is needed to help get yourself down. I'm sure if it's not peak-time here, one of the staff here could help you out, but it's just better with a pal. They can encourage you on as well, but don't laugh - you'll lose your concentration. ):
To climb up is to use 10% of your arms and 90% of your legs. Please don't do it the opposite way, like me. ): Being short (5'3") really does nothing to help me as there was often a point where I couldn't reach for a rock because I was just too short and had to shout to my friend that I was "ready" to come down.
You do sign a waiver for just-in-case, which I do believe that fast foods should encourage their eaters. "Just in case that you suffer the following, you cannot hold us liable." (I recently watched Supersize Me, okay.) I got a cut on my right thumb. My left hand looks like it's trying to call out to an alien hand, with it's bright callous forming spots and one blister.
Their prices also changed. Their website does not list the current prices.
$16 for use of the gym for as long as you want to, daily.
$3 for climbing shoes (but tennis shoes/walking shoes work just fine)
$3 for use of the harness and gri-gri
So overall, $19 instead of the calculated $30-something I got from the website. Nice, very nice.
I couldn't do more than an hour, but I might come back another day this summer. The bouldering looks like fun and I do want to master getting to the top, what with my short legs.
They have seating towards the back in the form of long tables and a small study area for other people, whereas the tables and chairs in the front are for more of a 'hang out' type of feel.
I like how they cut the mango. And I like how ripe the mango they cut was. It was that delicious little twist that reminds me of simple days when mango didn't give me the stomach flu.
They took a very long time to make my sister's iced americano though. I could have just driven back to Coffee Bean, jumped to the back of the counters (though I no longer work there and would have been given a reprimand by whoever was on shift duty), made one, and driven back to Jumpin' Boba to give my sister her iced americano. Yeah, took that long.
My sister said it was okay though. Nothing special.
Frozen yogurt though, very good. Very nomnomnom [!].
Folks, don't get me wrong. The chairs were really nice. Leather-bound, straight-spinals, like ... really nice. No eccentric angles here!
Obnoxious crowd, on the other hand... check.
Bright lights... check.
It was cute inside. The shelves inside were filled with baked items which I would hope haven't been sitting there for a long time already. It was also very dirty inside. The tables to sit and eat and converse and be obnoxious at were still dirty from the previous party eating there - spills from their shaved ice bowls, powders from eating their mochis there, dirty silverware just laying there.
The people working behind the counter looked nice, but it didn't look as if they came out from there very often.
It would have been nice if this was like that other mochi place in Little Tokyo, where they make it for you, fresh, and not take it out of their containers and wrap them up in paper liners. But eh, you can't have it all.

Back in the 90s, the COW was actually a small bus that was painted white with black spots. It was very fun telling my math tutor that my friend and I rode the COW to get to a place and receiving an astonished "What?! You actually rode a moo animal?" response back.
As time and the economy changes, so does the fare of bus prices. No longer a quarter, it's now 50 cents to travel. Never fear though - if you ride this bus long enough, you can purchase a bus pass for $20 a month for unlimited rides. That's ... um, move two digits over, carry the 1, ... as many rides as you want, duh!
Cerritos isn't a very large city, but it's kind of difficult to access everything here. It's all spread apart with lots of neighborhoods in between. There's not a lot of attraction here to hold my attention either when I walk, but on the bus - it makes everything seem a lot more attractive!
